Ben Davies to make debut

21st April 2019

Ben Davies will make his debut for Widnes Vikings against York City Knights at Bootham Crescent this afternoon.

Widnesian, Ben, started his pathway at the club through the Widnes Vikings Development Squad. Davies, who turned 19 yesterday, is a former Wade Deacon Student and played his community rugby at Halton Farnworth Hornets and Widnes Moorfield.

Ben carries representative honours having played for Lancashire in the 2018 Academy Origin, as well as being selected for the England Academy squad for the tour of the Australian Schoolboys at the end of last year.

Ben has impressed for the club's U19s in previous years, showing his ability as a commanding and powerful half-back with a strong running game. Whilst playing for the majority of the last few years at half-back, Ben has also operated in a number of positions for the club, and has deservedly earned his place onto the bench for the Vikings this afternoon.

Ben Davies says: "As a kid, I have always wanted to make it into the Widnes first team, and didn't actually think it would happen so quickly! I've worked hard in the last few years, so the prospect of playing for the first team is exciting.

"I know that I am coming into a team full of great players, which will only help me when I come on. I've grown up with a few, such as Jayden (Hatton) and Sam (Freeman), so I will be proud to play alongside some of my mates. Although playing for Lancashire and being picked in the England Academy squad was great, this is by far my best moment in rugby."

"I want to thank my mum and dad for taking me all over the place when I was younger and helping me to where I am today. I'd also like to thank my community coaches in Chris Smith, Ian Hatton and Will Tilleke, as well as the coaches here at the club in Grant, Ryan, Liam and Kurtis. All of these people have helped make today possible."
