It may have been a far from convincing display, but our U19s secured their third successive win with a six try display against the Tigers in a 34-24 victory.

Widnes got off to a great start when slick passing put Josh Wilde over, and with Joe Edge converting, a six point lead had been established.

However, it was soon whittled down to two points when Robbie Storey found his way over the try-line. It was proving to be an entertaining match with both sides looking good going forward and after 23 minutes, Widnes struck twice to take a grip on the game.

Swift, precise passing put Joe Edge in at the corner, and then a Jacob Dugdale break created a try for Daniel Hill. Joe Edge converted one of the tries to make it 4-16.

Dugdale was again involved when another good pass put in Josh Wilde for his second try and the Vikings looked to be taking a healthy lead into the break.

However, a defensive lapse let in Joe Fella, and with Jake Sweeting adding the extras, Castleford were back in the game.

HALF-TIME: Castleford Tigers 10-22 Widnes Vikings

Castleford’s kick off was inexplicably allowed to go over the dead ball line and for the next 10 minutes Widnes invited pressure upon themselves with error after error.

But a determined defence kept the home team out, and with their first foray into the Castleford 20 metre area, they scored. Ben Davies forced his way over from close range and Joe Edge added another two points.

The next 20 minutes saw both sides play some very scrappy rugby, with Castleford looking the most likely to score next. After 70 minutes they finally got over the line when Fella grabbed his second.

Widnes responded immediately and it was the impressive Dugdale who scooted over. Edge’s conversion made it 14-34 but Castleford didn’t throw in the towel and scored two late tries from Collinson and Carr, the latter which was the try of the game from deep inside their own half.
