The opening game of the season proved to be a tough, tense affair with the Giants running out 16-8 winners, but Widnes will be rueing a number of missed opportunities that could have won them the game.

The first 10 minutes was dominated by the Vikings and during this period, they scored the game’s opening try when Charlie McGraw went over in the corner.

Despite looking in control, the Vikings couldn’t increase their lead and slowly Huddersfield grew into the game. Two yellow cards were shown as things got a little overheated and Charlie McGraw, plus Danni Allatt, found themselves on the sidelines for 10 minutes.

The Giants levelled the scores when Emmi Manning was on the end of some good passing, and minutes later they made it 4-8 with a brilliant move from their own half which ended with Erin Stott going over from 50 metres.

A clever restart from Demi-Lea Fisher saw Huddersfield knock on and a couple of tackles later, Jenny Moss scored to make it eight points a-piece.

The game was becoming a war of attrition with some fearsome tackling from both sides and it looked like the game would go into the break all square. However, a rash Widnes pass, close to their own line plus conceding a couple of penalties, put them under severe pressure and Isabel Bibby put the Giants four points ahead.

The second half started with Widnes in a great attacking position but a lack of composure, which was a feature of the game, again let them down.

Huddersfield weren’t faring any better, as every time Widnes squandered a chance, they knocked on in their own half. But their defence repeatedly thwarted the Widnes attack and it became clear the next score would be vital. Huddersfield capitalised on a poor Jenny Moss pass to go 60 metres upfield but a great defensive effort kept them out.

With nine minutes left Huddersfield conceded a penalty, close to their line, and Widnes ploughed forward. Chloe Richardson looked likely to score but was hauled back by her hair. The referee couldn’t be sure if a try would have been scored so instead of a penalty try awarded a penalty and once again Widnes threw away a golden opportunity.

As is often the case, when a team has been constantly on the defensive, Huddersfield broke upfield and with four minutes left, Erin O’Grady scored a fine individual try to seal the game.
