Freeman To Make Competitive Debut

Freeman To Make Competitive Debut

7th April 2019

Widnes Vikings youngster, Sam Freeman, will make his competitive debut for the club today when taking to the field on the wing against Batley Bulldogs.

The 20-year old, who is another product of the club’s Academy system, attended Sts Peter & Paul school whilst playing his community rugby for Halton Farnworth Hornets.

The winger/fullback is the current Academy Players’ Player of the Year after his brilliant performances in the club’s U19s team throughout 2018.

Freeman, a local lad in Widnes, has been on dual-registration with North Wales Crusaders in 2019, scoring a superb length-of-the-field try against Hunslet in March.

Sam has already made a handful of pre-season appearances for the club, against Warrington in the 2018 Festive Derby, as well as in 2019 against Hull Kingston Rovers and North Wales Crusaders. Today will mark Freeman’s first competitive outing in a Vikings shirt.

Sam Freeman says, “I’m made up to be making my competitive debut for the club.

“It’s been hard seeing the lads run out every week and watching from the stands, but now I finally get to run out with them all in a competitive game.

“It’s been a long and tough 5 and half years to get to where I am now, and with me and my family being from Widnes, it’s going to be a very proud moment at Batley.

“I’d like to thank my mum and dad ahead of today. I want to thank them for taking me all over the place every weekend growing up, and always being there to support me. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do this without them."

Sam is proudly sponsored by Redway Europe.
