As the club continues it’s rebuild for the 2019 Betfred Championship season, a large number of the club’s supporters have already secured their seat for next year.

With over 1500 Memberships sold by our supporters for next season, we wanted to hear why those that have signed up are getting behind their club with their ‘#ViewFromMySeat’.

Read the thoughts of avid supporter, Martin Birrell, and why he has renewed for 2019…

“My Mum's family is from Widnes so it was my Grandad that used to take me down to the old Naughton Park and the love affair started from there.

“Back in the late 80s, being a Widnes fan was easy. We had such a great team and my favourite player was always Martin Offiah. I used to visit my Nana and Grandad for the weekend and my Grandad would even take me to the reserve games on a Friday night (usually via Paul's Chippy!).

“In terms of my favourite all time player, I've already said it has to be Martin Offiah but we had so many great players in that team, such as Jonathan Davies, Kurt Sorenson, Alan Tait etc. In more recent times I always liked Phil Cantillon and Mark Smith. Both great players and very loyal to the club during some difficult times.

“In terms of favourite memories following the club, I caught the back end of our golden period so I was at Old Trafford in 1989 and remember the evening quite vividly, despite only being 7.

“In more recent times, I really enjoyed the early part of the 2016 season. To be back at the top of the league felt really special, particularly the night we won away at Wigan at the DW Stadium.”

Martin, whilst not residing from the town, has always been a huge supporter of the club, and says that going to games and getting behind his club is something he looks forward to on a match day.

“I’m not from Widnes, but I feel like it has played a big part in my life.

“I spent so much time here as a youngster. I was always close with my grandparents and attending games now, like I did with my Grandad, is a way of me keeping his memory alive.

“I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be on a matchday.”

Martin, despite carrying frustration of the previous 12 months, believes that his loyal support of the club is needed more than ever ahead of 2019, and hopes that more follow him in renewing for 2019.

“Being a supporter during the good times is easy, but when things get difficult that is when the club needs you more than ever.

“I wouldn't say that I necessarily agree with every decision that has ever been made by the club, but it is still my club at the end of the day.

“I could never walk away when the going got tough, that's the easy thing to do.

“I remember when Hull KR went down in 2016, their fans rallied around and breathed life back into the club. I think that fired them back up to Super League the following season. Now is the time for us to stick together.”

Ahead of the new campaign under new Head Coach, Kieron Purtill, Martin says that he is already looking forward to next season getting underway.

“I’m really pleased a lot of our youngsters have stayed loyal to the club. and hopefully with more members signing up, we can add some more signings to the squad and get back up at the first time of asking.

“When you look at the youngsters that we've got, with many of them being Widnes lads, that's the kind of team any fan wants to see on the field. A lot of the boys signed up for next season are Widnes fans themselves.

“If you look at the teams in the Championship next season it's going to be a really good competition. So I can’t wait, roll on February!”
