Widnes Vikings can confirm that Jay Chapelhow has committed his immediate future to the club until the end of the 2019 season.

The 23-year-old front rower joined the Vikings at scholarship level back in 2011 alongside his twin brother Ted, having played their junior rugby at community club, West Bank Bears.

Chapelhow progressed through the ranks of the club’s Academy, securing a first team contract in 2015, a year that saw him make his senior bow. Jay’s debut for the Vikings came during the 2015 Super 8s competition, featuring off the bench in a 50-6 victory over Leigh Centurions.

The Runcorn-born forward also featured for Whitehaven in the Championship during 2015 and 2016, before his hard-work earned him a regular spot in the first-team.

To date, Jay has made 47 appearances for the Vikings, with 20 of those coming during the current season, a campaign which has seen the prop forward cross the whitewash five times.

Jay Chapelhow says: “It was quite an easy decision for me. I just wanted to see where I saw myself playing my best rugby, and what the best club would be to develop as a player, and for me it’s being at Widnes Vikings.

“I’ve supported the Club since I was young, and have been in the system for seven years and I absolutely love it here. It was quite an easy decision for me to re-sign for Widnes and not look at other places. I honestly see this Club doing really good things in the future.

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think the Club were able to get back in Super League. All of our aspirations are to play in Super League, and I wouldn’t have signed if I didn’t think we would have a good group of youngsters and a good bunch of senior lads who were going to be here to get us back up.

"It just shows with the people around the Club, the staff included, that everyone is straight away thinking of our goal to get back up because that’s where we want to be. I can guarantee that if we manage to implement the vision that we have, we will be back up there in no time.”

Phil Finney, Head of Youth at Widnes Vikings, says: “It is fantastic news for the club that Jay, who has featured prominently over the past two years, has decided to remain with the club.

“His work-ethic and commitment to the club is exemplary, defining him as a great role model for all of the younger players within the club.

“Jay is a Widnes Vikings fan, who is passionate about his role in helping to shape the future, and his importance in this cannot be emphasised enough.

“We are all very pleased and excited about watching him develop into a player of great significance for Widnes Vikings.”
