Widnes Vikings winger Owen Buckley says the Vikings need to build on Saturday’s win against Halifax RLFC ahead of the trip to Canada to face Toronto Wolfpack.

Francis Cummins’ side ran out 26-12 winners last weekend to keep their hopes of retaining their Super League status alive, with braces from Krisnan Inu and Patrick Ah Van helping the Vikings to victory.

Buckley, who has appeared in the Club’s last two games on the left wing, says it was great for the Vikings to get that win on the board.

“The boys were happy to get that win on Saturday,” he said.

“We felt we probably should have won the week before against Leeds after a good performance, so to finally get the two points this week was great for us.

“We now need to take that win, move on and use it to build on going to Toronto this week.”

Buckley made his 6th appearance of the year on the left wing against Halifax, and the local lad says that he is loving every minute of being in and around the first team squad.

“I’ve loved being in the first team this year,” he said.

“I’ve had to bide my time a little with the experienced heads like Pat (Ah Van) in front of me this year and take on board and learn from different people.

“But now that I’ve got that wing spot, I’ve got to make sure that I play well enough to stay in the side for the rest of the season.”

Widnes travel to Toronto later this week, and are looking to become only the third side behind Featherstone and Hull Kingston Rovers to claim victory in Canada.

Whilst the challenge presented for Owen and his teammates is a tough one, Buckley believes it’s one the Vikings are ready for.

“They’re a good side, and they’re physical too, and we need to match that from the first minute,” he said.

“It’s a new experience for us all going over there and facing them on the other side of the world, but it’s one we’re looking forward to.

“Nothing is confirmed for us yet, so we need to go there with the attitude that we can win the game and see where it takes us.”
