Widnes Vikings will be taking their Physical Disability and Learning Disability rugby league teams to their first ever competitive tournament next month, and the Club are welcoming newcomers to be a part of the historic event.

The Grand Day Out festival will take place in Blackpool on Saturday 8th September and will see disability sides from across the country compete for the medals and trophies up for grabs.

Participation numbers have been growing week-on-week since the launch of both the LDRL and PDRL teams, with new faces present at each training session.

The Club are continually recruiting for new players so that both sides will be represented at the tournament, marking their first ever competitive outing.

Training sessions have been running for the last month, with the Learning Disability team getting together every Monday at 5pm and the Physical Disability side’s session taking place every Tuesday at 6pm.

Newcomers are welcome to join the sessions which take place at the Halton Stadium, as participants have been working hard on their rugby league skills while learning the rules of both disciplines.

One of the early success stories of the Physical Disability side is Richie O’Connell, an ex-service man who was injured in the line of duty.

Since joining the Vikings he has made incredible progressions, seeing him run for the first time in eight years at a recent training session.

Richie is looking forward to the trip to Blackpool and said: “Representing Widnes Vikings will be an extremely proud moment for me, and I’m looking forward to our first game as a team.

“I’m hoping we can welcome some new players to boost the numbers ahead of the tournament.

“I’d encourage anyone thinking of joining either team to come down to training and give it a try, you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve both individually and as a team.”

LDRL and PDRL head coach, Lydia Cash, added: “It’s been fantastic to see the progress of our Learning Disability and Physical Disability sides since their launch.

“Some of our participants are achieving great things and now we are looking forward to our first ever fixtures as a team. We’re hoping more players can come and join us at training sessions on Monday’s and Tuesday’s to ensure we field two strong squads in the competition.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for new and existing members of the team to represent the Club and wear the Vikings colours with pride.”

To be a part of this historic event come and join our disability rugby league sessions at the Halton Stadium. Training takes place every Monday at 5pm for the Learning Disability team, and every Tuesday at 6pm for the Physical Disability team.
