4th July 2018

Widnes Vikings are proud to announce plans to create both a Physical Disability Rugby League team and a Learning Disability Rugby League team in an effort to help support making rugby league a sport for all.

Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) and Learning Disability Rugby League (LDRL) are modified versions of the world-known game, but neither sports hides away from the usual impact and collision or values of rugby league.

Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos played in the first PDRL fixture on these shores earlier this year, with the support of high profiled celebrities, such as comedians Adam Hills and Alex Brooker, taking part and offering their support.

On the back of this the Vikings, are looking to help support the growth of both PDRL and LDRL by launching teams for both in the coming months to take part in a number of festivals against other super league clubs.

The Vikings will hold numerous open training sessions for people to come and get involved, before forming a team to take part in matches in the future.

Richard Munson, Commercial and Community Director at Widnes Vikings, says: “As a Club, we are proud to be launching both PDRL and LDRL sides.

“Over the past year, we have seen first-hand the development and progression that the Women’s side has had since their launch last year, and we want to reach out and extend this level of opportunity to play and represent Widnes Vikings as much as we can.”

“Not only will the launch of these teams provide physical benefits to those involved, but also offers an environment for those to socialise, make new friends and be a part of something special.”

“We want to help make rugby league a game for all to love and participate in, and with the Club abiding by a ‘One Club’ philosophy, this was something we felt very passionate about.

“We are very excited to launch both of these teams, and I hope to see lots of people come down to our open sessions and be a part of the first ever Widnes Vikings PDRL/LDRL teams.”
