Moss proud to represent hometown club

The Vikings Media Team sat down with Jenny Moss, stand-off for the Widnes Vikings Women’s team, to discuss the team’s first ever win, her role in guiding the younger members of the team and her hopes for the Vikings ladies side going forward.

How did you first get into playing rugby league?

“I used to watch my brother at West Bank and then I joined that team when I was about ten. I just thought, ‘Wow- this is the sport I want to play.”

How proud are you to be a part of the first Vikings women’s team?

“I’m really proud. I’m from Widnes myself so it’s really great to be able to represent them, especially with it being the first open-age team to play on behalf of the town. Our team has come together quite strongly, so we’re like one big family now.”

What is your role within the squad?

“I’m a stand-off, so I’ve got to be quite chatty and get the girls to lift their heads up if something goes wrong. There’s a few younger girls in our team and obviously everyone is going to make mistakes, but there’s players in the team who have more experience, so we just try and lift each other. We’re all doing well and improving as the weeks go by.”

How did it feel claiming a 24-18 win over Wigan St Pats, the first ever win in the short history of our women’s team?

“It was amazing for the whole team. You could just tell by the look on everyone’s faces that it was one of the best feelings that we’ve had so far.”

Where do you think this team can be in four or five years’ time?

“I reckon that we can be top of Super League in four or five years, definitely. We’ve only been together for a few weeks so far and already the improvement that we’ve seen has been fantastic.”

How important is the work of the Vikings inter-school programme, going into schools and trying to inspire more girls to play Rugby League?

“It’s very important. There’s not many women rugby players that young girls can look up to, but obviously if we’re going into the schools, the young girls are going be thinking, “We can do that.” It’s so important that we advertise that these girls can, and I think that in ten years or so, they could be the next women’s team.”

Back the girls!
