Past Meetings: Huddersfield Giants

5th March 2018

Widnes Vikings take on Huddersfield Giants at the Halton Stadium on Friday 9th March, kick-off (8:00pm).

The Vikings will be looking to continue their strong showing on home soil in 2018, and will be looking to grab the two points on Friday night to consolidate the Club's position at the top end of the Super League table.

Therefore, to whet the appetite, we take a look back at memorable previous meetings with Friday's opponents down the years...

2016 - Huddersfield Giants 18-36 Widnes Vikings

Widnes Vikings recorded their first win away at Huddersfield in over 20 years to go top of Super League with a resounding victory.

The Vikings started the game like a house on fire, and scored three tries in the first 20 minutes to put them in complete control. Firstly, Rhys Hanbury drew in a defender and put Dean through a gap to score, followed by a wonderful Kevin Brown right to left pass out to Stefan Marsh for a walk in try. Charly Runciman then pounced on a fumbled high ball to walk in and the Vikings were 18-0 up.

Michael Lawrence got the Giants on the board and reduced the deficit, but that was quickly wiped out by MacGraff Leuluai crashing onto a flat, line pass to score and keep the Vikings out of touching distance.

Further tries from Stefan Marsh and a Corey Thompson double, with brilliant work on his inside by Chris Bridge to put him in, extended the Vikings lead, and the Giants could only respond through Larne Patrick and Jamie Foster, which acted as consolation efforts as the Vikings eased to victory in Yorkshire.

Huddersfield: Murphy, McGillvary, Cudjoe, S. Wood, Foster, Connor, Ellis, Rapira, Hinchcliffe, J. Johnson, Ta'ai, Lawrence, Patrick. Replacements: Smith, Leeming, Mason, Roberts.

Widnes: Hanbury, Thompson, Bridge, Runciman, Marsh, Mellor, Brown, O'Carroll, White, Dudson, Dean, Houston, Cahill. Replacements: Whitley, Manuokafoa, Leuluai, Heremaia.

2016 - Widnes Vikings 24-20 Huddersfield Giants

Widnes Vikings staged a brilliant comeback from 16-0 down to end a run of eight consecutive Super League defeats.

Early tries from Nathan Mason, Danny Brough and Joe Wardle had the visitors in command, before Corey Thompson got on the end of a looping cut-out pass from Kevin Brown to dive in at the corner and hand the Vikings a lifeline just before the break.

After the break, Joe Mellor raced through the Giants defence and rounded Scott Grix to reduce the deficit further before a move from right to left found Hanbury, and Rhys put Stefan Marsh into space for a walk in try to level the scoring.

The Vikings would take the lead for the first time in the game when Corey Thompson’s extraordinary effort to stay in the field of play and kick on for himself to score put Denis Betts’ side in front, and Joe Mellor consolidated that with a close range effort that was similar to his first try.

Huddersfield did reply through Jermaine McGillvary but the Vikings held on for a brilliant home victory.

2014 - Widnes Vikings 22-20 Huddersfield Giants

Widnes scored two late tries to record an early season win over Paul Anderson’s Huddersfield Giants.

Early tries from Jermaine McGillvary and Leroy Cudjoe, who took an interception from a Danny Craven pass to run 80 metres, put the Giants into an early 10-0 lead.

Rhys Hanbury then responded for the Vikings as he sidestepped his way from close range over the try-line after the half-hour. Denis Betts’ side then turned down the chance for a shot at two points from a penalty, and were rewarded when Paul Clough crashed over after Marsh and Craven had gone close on the two tackles previous.

Eorl Crabtree then crashed over from close range for the Giants early in the second half, but the Vikings wouldn’t be denied and a Joe Mellor try from a loose Huddersfield pass, coupled with a second for Hanbury after Jack Owens has managed to get the ball out in a three-man tackle, sealed the points for the Vikings, and a league double over their opponents.

Huddersfield: Grix; McGillvary, Cudjoe, Wardle, Murphy; Brough, Robinson; Crabtree, Wood, Kopczak, Ferres, Chan, Lawrence. Replacements: Bailey, Faiumu, Ta'ai, Kaufusi.

2012 - Widnes Vikings 26-22 Huddersfield Giants

A late try from Cameron Phelps handed the Vikings a shock victory over their opponents and ended their eight match losing streak in their first season back in Super League.

On-loan hooker Paul McShane had a hand in the Vikings’ first two tries, first assisting for Ah Van to dive in at the corner, then darted out of dummy half and gave it to Mellor to place a nice kick into the in-goal for Hanbury to touch down.

The Vikings then extended their lead further as prop forward Ben Cross got on the end of a McShane grubber into the Giants in-goal area and was first to get a hand to the ball. Ah Van converted to make it 16-0 to the home side.

With Steve Pickersgill in the sin bin, the Giants took advantage of their man advantage and cut the deficit with a try from Dale Ferguson, before Danny Brough gave a nice ball to Fa’alogo to score to make it 16-12 at the break.

After half time, Patrick Ah Van kicked two penalty goals to stretch the lead to eight points, but a Scott Grix try pulled the Giants back close. Brough added two penalty goals to his conversion for Grix’s try and the away side looked to be heading back with the points, but the Vikings weren’t finished.

Hanbury’s grubber kick in the last minute ricocheted off the padding on the post, and a number of bodies tried to get their hand to the ball, but Cameron Phelps was quickest of them all to touch down and hand the Vikings a valuable two points that lifted them off the foot of the table.
