A try three minutes from time cruelly robbed the Vikings U19s of a share of the spoils in a game which saw both teams score three tries a-piece.

The visitors were soon on the scoreboard when centre Sam Grant stopped and pirouetted to find a massive gap in the Widnes defence. His pass put Joe Brown over and with Harry Smith converting, Wigan had an early six point lead.

It was soon 4-6 as good passing down the Widnes left saw Oliver Brookes go over in the corner, and seven minutes later, Owen Buckley scored to give his side a two point advantage.

Despite the freezing conditions, both sides continued to play good rugby but it was defences on top as neither team could cross the line.

Just before the break, the Vikings were reduced to 12 men when Keanan Brand was sent to the sin-bin after saying something to the referee, but despite being a man down, it was Widnes who scored again. Wigan lost possession in their own half and Jayden Hatton showed his strength to score his side's third try.

The second half, in comparison, was rather scrappy, with both teams guilty of unforced errors and giving penalties away.

Widnes were struggling to get into the opposition half but neither side looked like scoring until Wigan loose forward Joseph Shorrocks made a decisive break. Harry Smith was in support and he found Brown who scored, under the posts, for his second try of the game. Smith's conversion levelled matters at 12-12.

The game looked like it was going to end in a draw. Smith's drop goal attempt went wide but Wigan maintained their pressure and when Sammy Kibula received the ball five metres out, there was no stopping him as he barged over the line beneath the posts.

Widnes made one last valiant effort to snatch a draw but despite forcing a goal line drop out they couldn't score and for the third successive game, the U19s found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline.
