An encouraging start to the season and a great beginning to Grant Gore's coaching career as Head Coach of the Club's U19s as his charges scored eight tries in beating Catalans Dragons 42-16.

It didn't take long for Widnes to score the opening try and after two minutes, it was Owen Buckley who touched down in the corner. Catalans responded immediately when Florian Vailhen barged over from close range, and after Arthur Morgue's conversion, the visitors found themselves in a two point lead.

A high Chris Wilson kick saw Buckley rise in familiar fashion to catch and score his second try. Lloyd Roby added the extras and Widnes led 10-6 in a game which was already providing plenty of entertainment.  Buckley then produced a tremendous try saving tackle before nearly completing his hat trick but the try was disallowed for a knock on. Catalans regained the lead when Vailhen scored again to give Morgue an easy conversion.

The last 10 minutes of the half saw Widnes take control and after Keanan Brand had spurned a good chance, some good passing from the home side put Sam Freeman over. A neat Chris Wilson kick saw Brand score Widnes' fourth try and with Roby converting one of these, Widnes went into the break leading 20-12.

The second half started just like the first and Brand was in for his brace, which was soon followed by Lloyd Roby racing in from 40 metres. Roby's kick made it 30-12 but with 30 minutes left the game was far from over.

Catalans rallied but a converted breakaway try from Lewis Else put the game out of reach for the Dragons. They did score a well deserved try from winger Kevin Benet but it was Widnes who had the final word when Jake Burns was on the end of a great break to score his side's eighth try which Roby converted.

This was an impressive win against a big Catalan side.  The left side combination of Brand and Buckley were always a threat whilst the forwards more than matched their opponents.  Another big test lies ahead when they play Leeds Rhinos in a fortnight but they will be confident after this opening display.
