Widnes Vikings CEO, James Rule, has exclusively spoken to and praised supporters as the Club prepares to pay its respects to Kato Ottio at tonight's game against Whitehaven RLFC...

"It goes without saying that it has been a harrowing few days for all of us in the Vikings family. Words do not really express the shock and sadness that I experienced upon receiving the news that Kato had passed away.

In all of the sadness, there is one shining positive, and that is the truly humbling response of all of our supporters, stakeholders, and indeed the wider community of Rugby League.

Our actions, comments and generosity via the Crowdfunder page have showcased all that is good about our organisation, and makes me exceptionally proud to be the CEO of this Club. I would like to thank everybody for conducting themselves with such class and dignity. I know our response has meant a great deal to the people of Papua New Guinea, and I have received numerous messages, including from Wellington, thanking us for what we are doing.

Tonight is our key opportunity to pay our respects to Kato and his family. There will be a full squad representation on the field during the minutes silence, and we will be streaming this mark of respect live via Facebook around the world.

This is a real opportunity to showcase to the Rugby League community, but particularly to the people of Papua New Guinea, how we at Widnes Vikings do things.

I therefore request for as many of our supporters to make the trip this evening to the Halton Stadium and play their part in this mark of respect.

Can I also respectfully ask to give yourself plenty of time and get your tickets in advance from the Tesco Superstore or well before kick-off from the South Stand Ticket Office, which is open three hours prior to the game.

It would be a real shame for anybody to miss their opportunity to pay their respects to Kato whilst waiting in line to buy a ticket as the game kicks off.

Thank you once again for your support and let’s make tonight a special representation of how Widnes Vikings operate and pay our respects to Kato and his family as a collective “One Club” Family."

Widnes Vikings have set up a crowd funder to support the loved ones of Kato Ottio, teammate of Stanton and Wellington. Please click here to donate to this important cause.
