Widnes Vikings Academy product Ed Chamberlain has been called up into Ireland’s 2017 Rugby League World Cup 24-man squad, taking place Down Under in the coming weeks.

Ireland take on Italy, Papua New Guinea and Wales in the Pool Stage of the Competition, starting their campaign on October 25th against Italy in Cairns, Australia.

Ed is a graduate of the Vikings Academy, which is rated as Outstanding by the RFL, and has been part of the Vikings first team squad for a couple of years. Making 19 appearances in 2017 with the Vikings, as well as in spells at Workington Town and Bradford Bulls, Chamberlain has impressed Ireland head coach Mark Aston enough to earn his first international call up.

Last month, Ed recently put pen-to-paper on a new deal one year deal with Widnes Vikings. The centre recently discussed his ambition of securing a consistent first team spot next season, and will be hoping that the opportunity to shine on the international stage will help him with achieve that goal.

“This call up is huge for me,” Ed said.

“I haven’t played as much this season, so I can’t wait to get over there and get back on the field and playing again.

“At international level, playing against some great players, as well as being in a different country, you have to be at your best in every game. It will be a big challenge and I’m looking forward to it.”

The 24-man Ireland squad is as follows:

Liam Finn (capt) (Wakefield Wildcats), Scott Grix (vice-capt) (Wakefield), James Hasson (Wakefield), Kyle Amor (St Helens), Liam Kay (Toronto Wolf Pack), Will Hope (Sheffield Eagles), Oliver Roberts (Huddersfield Giants), Ed Chamberlain (Widnes Vikings), George King (Warrington), Toby King (Warrington), Joe Keyes (Bradford Bulls), Joe Philbin (Warrington), Jack Higginson (Wigan Warriors), Anthony Mullally (Leeds Rhinos), Tyrone McCarthy (Salford Red Devils), Brad Singleton (Leeds Rhinos), Micky McIlorum (Wigan Warriors), Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook (St Helens), Api Pewhairangi (London Broncos), Matty Hadden (Rochdale Hornets), Shannon McDonnell (Camden Rams), Casey Dunne (Longhorns RL), James Kelly (Sheffield Eagles), Alan McMahon (Waterford Vikings), Mikey Russell (Coventry Bears).
