Widnes Vikings held their annual End of Season lunch on Tuesday afternoon. The event provided an opportunity to thank and congratulate people who have made a real difference to the Club both on and off the field.

The event launched with Vikings volunteer, and life-long supporter, Denis Thomas receiving the ‘One Club’ award. Denis has been tireless in his support of the Vikings community programmes, including helping to form Golden Generation, supporting our care home reminiscence programmes and supporting the launch of Offload.

Jay and Ted Chapelhow collected the Tony Bamber Cup, the award given to players who have made the biggest impact in the Community. The twins have shown incredible dedication to the Vikings community programmes, supporting everything from Sky Try and Gamechanger sessions that improve the health of local children to leading the Vikings recent NHS awareness campaigns.

The Young Player of the Year Award was presented to Academy product Danny Walker. The tenacious hooker has enjoyed a brilliant start his first team career, making eleven impressive appearances that have marked him as one of the best young players in the game.

The Vikings’ Club Man award was presented to Academy Education Manager, Kurtis Marsh. Kurtis been tireless in his efforts to support the growth of the Vikings Academy and give back to the game that he loves. From supporting the Vikings young players to achieve qualifications to opening his home to new players moving to our town, Kurtis has shown real dedication and commitment to the Vikings.

Vikings Co-Captain Chris Houston closed the event, walking away both the Players’ Player of the Year and the Stronghold Player of the Year awards. Making 27 appearances this season, the back rower has been consistently impressive in a challenging year for the Vikings, with his defensive efforts providing solidity to those around him, making over 700 tackles.

Houston achieved 35% of the vote from the 2017 Viking Stronghold Members. He was followed by Hep Cahill and Danny Craven, who came in second and third place respectively. The players’ vote also saw Gil Dudson and Hep Cahill shortlisted for their accolade.

KEY QUOTES:

Chris Houston on picking up two awards - “I’m a little bit embarrassed to be honest. I wasn’t expecting any awards and I thought both our front rowers have been outstanding this year, in Gil Dudson and Jack Buchanan. When they’re going forward, it makes everyone else’s jobs easier, but I thank the boys for the votes.

“Our supporters are great and it’s good getting recognised on the field by them. The big thing for us players is being recognised by your peers, so I thank the boys for their votes.”

Jay Chapelhow on receiving the Community Award:

“We’re over the moon, it’s nice to be recognised for things like this. I feel like the whole squad could have been up for this award as the effort from us all going into the community is above all other Super League clubs.

On his favourite moments this year in the Community - “The NHS campaign we did was great. It was a full day job but. My other favourite ones are just going into schools, putting smiles on their kids faces.”

Ted Chapelhow on why they enjoy doing community promos - “It started when we were young and people used to come into the clubs we belonged to.  Now we want to go out and give back to the kids we go and see. Sometimes you don’t realise how a player coming in can make their day. Just to be a part of these activities has been really exciting for us and all the players. I like to think that everyone is working together and buying into what Widnes are trying to do in helping the community, which they do a great job of.”
