Widnes Vikings are delighted to announce that brothers Steve and Mike O'Neill will be amongst the special guests speaking at the upcoming Wembley Heroes reunion event this month. They shared their memories of visiting the Twin Towers ahead of this big event...

The Event

On Wednesday 23rd August, Widnes Vikings will be hosting a special celebration event at the Halton Stadium, marking the Club's 1981 and 1984 Challenge Cup triumphs (7.00pm start).

The event, which takes place in the week leading up to the 2017 Challenge Cup final, will reunite the heroes of two of Widnes' greatest days. Expect to see some of Widnes' biggest ever names and to hear fascinating tales from the glory days of The Chemics.

Special Memories

Mike O'Neill made over 400 appearances for Widnes during a 13-year spell that started in 1977.

During his time with the Club, Mike has two Championship titles, six Premiership final wins, four Challenge Cup appearances and three John Player Final appearances. The front row was renowned as a strong and uncompromising prop forward.

His performances for the Chemics gave Mike the opportunity to represent Great Britain four times, as well as touring Australia and New Zealand in 1984.

“My most treasured memory playing for the Chemics was probably my visits to Wembley with Widnes.

“As many people know, we were known as the Cup Kings because of the numerous visits to Wembley in the 70s and 80s.

“I was a playing substitute in that game as we beat Wakefield 12-3 in 1979. 1981 was also a great memory, when we played Hull KR. It was a team in transition, with Jim Mills and Mal Aspey leaving, so that win was against the odds so that really is a memory that I treasure.”

Steve O'Neill started his career with Wigan Warriors in 1976, before making a move to Widnes in 1981. Steve would make over 200 appearances for the Club, scoring 12 tries playing as either a prop, like his brother, or in the second row. Steve has Challenge Cup final experience with the Vikings, making the 1984 side that overcame Wigan, scoring a drop-goal in a 19-6 victory.

Steve also played for Wigan, Swinton and Salford during his career, and made an appearance for England in 1981 during his time at Central Park.

“My favourite memory of Widnes would have to be winning at Wembley in the 1984 Challenge Cup final, as we managed to beat Wigan 19-6,” Steve said.

“It was great for me and probably my favourite ever rugby moment. Scoring a drop goal in that game and playing alongside my brother in the game is a memory will last forever.”
