Community clubs from Widnes and Warrington came together for a special Sky Try Derby 9’s festival on the I-Pitch, prior to #TheBigOne against Warrington Wolves last week.
Fourteen teams from Rylands Sharks, Latchford Giants, Culceth and Woolston Rovers from Warrington, along with Halton Farnworth Hornets and West Bank Bears from Widnes took part in the festival. It offered fantastic entertainment ahead of the Club’s highest attended home game of the Betfred Super League season.
The event was delivered by Sean Mellor, who has recently joined the Vikings as our Community Rugby League Coordinator, alongside Daniel Scott, Education Partnership Manager. In this new role, Sean will be pivotal in supporting the Vikings to develop its links with community clubs and support the local growth of the grassroots game.
Sean says: “This was a brilliant way to kick-start the Easter period. To see so many children on the pitch prior to the game against Warrington, enjoying themselves and getting involved in the festival, was exactly what we aspire to do."
“We aim to host many more festivals like this throughout the 2017 season. We're looking forward to following this up with an under 8's tournament at tonight's game."
