On a bitterly cold afternoon it was Wigan who turned up the heat with a blistering second half performance, in which the home side scored five tries.

The first half was, in every sense, a very even half with defences on top.  The cold weather contributed to a number of handling errors and it wasn't until the 25th minute that the first score came.  Widnes lost possession in their own half and then compounded matters by conceding a penalty.  Wigan pressure ensued and the sizeable frame of Sammy Kibula burst onto a short ball to score.  Josh Woods converted.

Five minutes before the break a Wigan pass was plucked out of the air by Owen Buckley and the pacy winger ran 60 metres to open the Widnes account.  Brad Walker converted and scores were level at the break.

Widnes started the second half brightly and a lovely Brad Walker pass put Luke Draper over and with Walker converting the young Vikings held a six point advantage.  However this only served to rile the home team and two quick tries from second rower Jack Wells, plus a conversion from Woods, put Wigan into a 16-12 lead. This was a lead they didn't relinquish.

Widnes were under the cosh at this stage and a suspicious pass 30 metres out opened them up and Liam Paisley touched down.  Wigan conceded three quick penalties to give Widnes good field position but they were unable to take advantage and when they lost the ball in their own half, Paisley scored his second.  With Woods adding the extras to both tries, Wigan held a 16 point lead with six minutes left.  Right on time, Josh Ganson scored the final try, which Woods converted, to give a final scoreline which didn't reflect the effort Widnes had put in.
