Those who attended our Touch Rugby League programme were in for a Fit Fans session with a difference with a Sex Education class offered in addition to taking part on the I-Pitch last Friday evening.

Working in collaboration with Halton Health Improvement Team, as part of our commitment to supporting health and wellbeing in Halton, Emma Cuerden and Laura Rose from St Helens and Knowsley Health Informatics visited all the attendees at the programme to promote positive sexual health.

Emma and Laura offered insight into positive sexual health, but also the risks of undiagnosed infections, with the knowledge being obtained in a friendly and informal environment.

Liam Clark said: "We'd like to thank Emma and Laura for coming in. Fit Fans gives participants a weekly physical activity session but also provides them with key information on a range of topics regarding their health."

Jane Marshall of St Helens and Knowsley Health Informatics said: “Working with local groups such as Widnes Vikings is a great opportunity to promote positive sexual health and enable people to find out the facts about infections that could affect them and their partners," she said.

"It is important to understand the risks of undiagnosed infections such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea and HIV.  There is a big push at the moment to detect undiagnosed infections and in particular Chlamydia which is a sexually transmitted infection that often has no symptoms meaning that people are not always aware of their infection.  Regular screening is important to ensure any infections are detected and treated.  Screening is simple and straight forward and the Sexual Health Team are encouraging anyone who has ever had unprotected sex (that is sex without a condom) to have a test.

"The work we have done with this group has meant that we are able to provide knowledge and opportunity for individuals to find out more about sexual health in a friendly and informal environment.  If anyone is concerned about their sexual health or would like to have a sexual health screen they can call into any of our clinics – all of which are completely confidential.  For clinic times, visit www.getiton.org.uk”.

Fit Fans takes place every week on a Friday evening at the Halton Stadium from 5:30pm.
