Full Time Report

Salford Red Devils' on-loan prop Greg Burke scored a try against parent club Widnes Vikings as the hosts secured a 26-12 victory at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The visitors made a fast start when Tom Gilmore added the extras to his sixth-minute touchdown, but Salford responded with two tries in the space of five minutes from Kris Welham.

Widnes regained the lead thanks to Patrick Ah Van's converted try and they went in at the break 12-8 ahead.

But Salford made home advantage count in the second period as tries from Jake Bibby, Burke and Robert Lui, who also landed three successful kicks, clinched victory.

The Vikings finished the game with 12 men after Chris Houston was sent off for dissent in the 70th minute.

Salford assistant coach Willie Poching said: “I was pleased the guys got some reward because at times this year we’ve had good performances but not the results.

“We all hoped a win would spark us and hopefully this will prove to be the case. It was a courageous performance and not everything went smoothly for us.

“Some players had to play in unfamiliar positions but sometimes you have to overcome those adversities.”

Widnes interim coach Francis Cummins said: "I thought we let ourselves down which has been the pattern for most of the year.

“Salford kept completing which is credit to them because they are down to the bare bones. We had enough ball to win that game and for large parts of it we were in charge. At the moment we can’t seem to get out of the cycle of making errors.”
