Full Time Report

Huddersfield Giants took another giant step towards Betfred Super League safety and confirmed Widnes Vikings' place in the Qualifiers with an emphatic 40-0 victory at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Giants still need one more win from their last two games of the regular season to clinch a top-eight spot but, on this form, they can already look forward to the Super 8s with confidence.

It was routine for Huddersfield from the moment Australian prop Shannon Wakeman took hooker Kruise Leeming's short pass to crash over before Jermaine McGillvary went over for his 14th try of the season five minutes later.

Ryan Hinchcliffe added a third while the visitors wasted two promising positions before Greg Burke was held up.

Substitute Adam O'Brien made an immediate impact, dummying his way over for his side's fourth try and they ran riot in the second half, with Darnell McIntosh adding a fifth before McGillvary notched a second and Ukuma Ta'ai rounded off a comfortable win.

Widnes coach Denis Betts branded his team "disgraceful" and "atrocious" after the defeat.

"It was disgraceful to be honest," he said. "I was embarrassed by the team's effort and skill.

"We had chances in the first couple of sets and dropped the ball and bombed 18 points. We then ran out of energy on the back of our lack of completion. We gave them about 28 extra tackles."

Rick Stone added: "If you'd have given me 40-0 before the game, I would have snatched your hand off. The scoreline is one we were looking for obviously in the context of the competition.

"It was not a pretty game, there were a lot of errors from both teams and there are some things we need to look at but I'm happy to come away with a nil scoreline."
