Full Time Report

Huddersfield Giants kicked off their Betfred Super League season with a 28-16 victory at Widnes Vikings.

The Giants, who endured a miserable campaign in 2016, went behind early on as Charly Runciman crossed in the fourth minute.

But Jermaine McGillvary scored twice and Lee Gaskell and Tom Symonds crossed during an 18-minute spell to give Rick Stone's side a 20-6 lead at the interval.

After Aaron Murphy crossed in the 55th minute for the visitors, Widnes threatened a comeback with tries from Stefan Marsh and Rhys Hanbury but new Giants skipper Leroy Cudjoe sealed the win two minutes from time.

Huddersfield head coach Stone said: "To come away with a win is a real positive. The boys can go away feeling good about themselves.

"We controlled the first half and played some very good, direct football. We had a bit of a buffer at half-time and didn't manage things as perfectly in the second half."

Vikings coach Denis Betts said: "We are a miles better side than we showed tonight. They ran and tackled harder than us and we weren't at the races."
