Widnes-born Tom had trials with Liverpool Football Club before he turned his ambitions to rugby league and  represented England at both Under-15 and Under-16 levels, winning the Player of the Tournament award in the Under-16 European Cup in 2009. An excellent organiser, with a strong passing and kicking game, Tom was called up to the England Academy squad in 2011 but subsequent knee ligament damage brought an early end to his season as he seemed destined to make his first team debut. That debut finally came from the bench against London Broncos in 2012 when 'Magpie' achieved his ambition of playing for Widnes in Super League, adding an appearance and goal, from Scrum Half in the defeat at Huddersfield in 2013. Further senior experience came Tom's way in subsequent seasons, including loan appearances for North Wales Crusaders and London Broncos. Scoring 100 points in 2018 saw keen fisherman Tom pass the career milestone  of 200 points.
