Born in Hastings, New Zealand, Hep began playing rugby league with the Otane Sports Club in the HawkesBay region of New Zealand, where he was also an age grade New Zealand Kick Boxing champion. Having represented the New Zealand Maori side in 2008 Hep made his NRL debut for the Melbourne Storm in 2009 and was a member of the successful Storm team that defeated Leeds in the 2010 World Club Championship. In an outstanding debut season with the Vikings in 2012 Hep collected both the Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards, while during an injury-hit 2013 he further enhanced his reputation at the highest level. 2014 saw Hep again demonstrate his consistency and durability, also turning out in the Front Row on several occasions, while 2015 brought his 100th career appearance in both hemispheres, followed by his 100th Super League appearance for Widnes in 2016.
